Ramos-Horta honors 12 Chinese doctors in East Timor

The President of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, awarded the medal of merit to 12 Chinese doctors on Tuesday in recognition of their contribution to the country's health sector.

"The awarding of the Medal of Merit to these 12 dedicated doctors symbolizes the profound gratitude of the people of Timor-Leste ," said the Timorese head of state, quoted in a press release.

According to José Ramos-Horta, the services of these professionals “embody the spirit of international cooperation and contribute to saving countless lives,” strengthening the medical capabilities of the Timorese, as well as strengthening the bonds of friendship and solidarity between Timor-Leste and China.

The first Chinese medical brigade arrived in Timor-Leste in 2003 as part of a cooperation agreement signed between the two countries.

Since then, according to the Timorese Presidency, dozens of Chinese medical brigades have passed through the country.

The brigade that is now completing its mission was in the country for two years and served at the Guido Valadares National Hospital and several health centers, having treated 19,000 urgent cases and outpatient consultations, carried out 5,800 hospitalizations and performed 1,300 surgeries.

The team of Chinese doctors also provided free medical care in remote areas of the country, conducted first aid training, and participated in and supported several national and international scientific symposiums to share knowledge.

The new team of Chinese doctors arrives in Timor-Leste on Wednesday from the Chinese province of Sichuan, the Timorese Presidency adds.
