NATO Secretary General Rutte rejects claims he called Trump 'daddy'

The head of the North Atlantic Alliance clarified that his phrase about “daddy” did not refer to the American leader.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte claims that his remark about "daddy" during a conversation with US President Donald Trump was not taken in the sense he intended.
The head of NATO clarified that the statement did not concern the American leader himself.
"In Europe, I sometimes hear countries asking, 'Mark, will the United States stay with us?' And I say, 'It's a bit like a little kid asking his dad, 'Daddy, will you stay with us?'" the secretary general explained, as quoted by Reuters.
Rutte stressed that he had used the word "daddy" in this context. He also added that European countries had supposedly "grown up" due to the fight against Russia and the US demands to increase defense spending.
Let us recall that Politico newspaper wrote earlier that some European officials expressed dissatisfaction with Mark Rutte's "sycophantic" behavior towards Donald Trump at the NATO summit in The Hague. The publication specifies that they are "irritated" and "embarrassed" in connection with the "servile" behavior of the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance.
