Fraudsters are massively placing fake QR codes in public places: scanning them automatically transfers funds to the fraudsters' accounts. This was reported to TASS by the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry, responding to the agency's request.

Thus, the user scans the code in anticipation of a promotion or discount, but the operation automatically sends money to the fraudster's account, the press center explained. The department emphasized that such QR codes are actively distributed in public areas.

To avoid the fate of the victim, the Ministry of Internal Affairs advises checking the origin of the QR code, not scanning codes from untrusted sources, and controlling the final address of the link (many applications display the URL before the transition). It is also necessary to avoid entering confidential data unnecessarily, especially bank details, and not download applications via QR codes, but install them exclusively from official stores.

Users are also advised to use antivirus programs and secure applications to recognize QR codes.
