Cabotage Day messages: When is Cabotage Day?

Cabotage Day messages: When is Cabotage Day?

During the Ottoman Empire, the empire did not have the right to cabotage. Because of the capitulation rights granted to Western countries, foreign-flagged vessels generally provided service on the coasts of the Ottoman Empire. However, according to the Treaty of Lausanne signed on July 24, 1923, capitulations were abolished. Thus, Turkey gained the right to cabotage. Considering that Türkiye is largely a peninsula country and has a coastline of 8,333 kilometers, this provided great opportunities for Turkish maritime. After the necessary arrangements were made, according to Law No. 815 issued on April 19, 1926, it was made mandatory for only Turkish vessels to provide service between Turkish ports.

The law came into effect on July 1 of the same year. This date began to be celebrated as Cabotage Day in 1935. In 2007, the word "maritime" was added to the word "cabotage" and the name of the holiday became "Maritime and Cabotage Day".
