Glaucoma is an insidious danger: Early diagnosis is vital

Glaucoma is an insidious danger: Early diagnosis is vital

Glaucoma occurs when the optic nerves are damaged as a result of increased intraocular pressure. The most dangerous aspect of the disease is that the person is often unaware of the condition. Op. Dr. Günerigök said, “Most patients come to us when their field of vision narrows or their vision becomes blurry. However, this is a period when nerve cells are seriously damaged. Unfortunately, the damage caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed.”

IN THE RISK GROUP OVER 40 YEARS OF AGE

Although glaucoma can be seen at any age, individuals over the age of 40, those with a family history of glaucoma, those with systemic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and those who have used cortisone for a long time are at risk. Op. Dr. Günerigök said, “Since glaucoma usually progresses slowly and insidiously, it is very important to have an eye examination once a year, especially for those in the risk group.”

EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND MULTI-FUNCTIONAL TREATMENT IN MODERN DIAGNOSIS

When glaucoma is diagnosed early, vision loss can be prevented. Intraocular pressure measurement, visual field testing and optic nerve head analysis are performed for diagnosis. Treatment options include using drops, laser applications and surgical interventions. In recent years, GATT surgeries, known as sutureless glaucoma surgery, can be performed on suitable patients. However, Op. Dr. Günerigök said, “Regular follow-up and compliance with medication use are very important for the treatment to be successful.”

EYE CHECKS ARE ALSO IMPORTANT FOR GENERAL HEALTH

Stating that glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the world, Op. Dr. Günerigök emphasized that regular eye check-ups are of great importance not only for eye health but also for the protection of overall quality of life.
