He beat cancer! He's living his second spring with bees
Born in the Of district of Trabzon, Mehmet Kansız was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1989. After beating the cancer following treatment, Kansız began beekeeping with hives his brother bought him, following his doctor's advice to do "light work."
Having produced honey in the mountains for 35 years and spending the last 11 years in the Erzurum plateaus, Kansız found health and peace in beekeeping in the second spring of his life.
Mehmet Kansız said that he was very upset when he was diagnosed with cancer, but he received treatment after a difficult process.
Kansız, who stated that he had started a new life after his hospital stay, said: "After the doctors reviewed my final tests, they said I was cancer-free. I went to the doctor and asked, 'Doctor, what do you recommend I do?' The doctor recommended doing light work for a month or two. Then my brother bought a hive as light work. Then a friend living in Europe sent me some hives, and I bought some too. I started beekeeping in the highlands of Bayburt with seven hives. I placed my hives next to a friend's bees. I knew nothing about beekeeping. I pursued this venture. Then I took a course and learned everything about it. That's how I got started."
Kansız stated that he has been engaged in beekeeping alone in the İspir district of Erzurum since 2014, and that he spent time on the plateau where he arrived at the beginning of May until the end of October.
Kansız, who stated that he owes his health to living in the highlands, said, "Stay in the highlands to avoid illnesses. When you stay here for 15 days, your blood changes. I recommend beekeeping to everyone."
Kansız, who stated that he doesn't pursue beekeeping for financial gain, said, "I'll be beekeeping until I die. I'm not thinking 'I'll make money while beekeeping.' I'm 79 years old, and I've earned what I could have earned in my youth. I've set up a company for my children. I live here. They come to visit me occasionally. I'll keep doing this until my feet get tied up. I can't quit beekeeping."
