Hypertension also affects young people

Hypertension also affects young people

Cardiology Specialist Dr. Onur Yıldırım said, “Hypertension (HT) is one of the most common diseases in the world. Although it is generally known as a disease of old age, it is also seen under the age of 40. Hypertension seen under the age of 40 is called hypertension that occurs at a young age. Although the rates of occurrence under the age of 40 vary according to societies, it is between approximately 9% and 22%. When we look at the risk factors of hypertension that occurs at a young age, increasing obesity and sleep apnea syndrome are at the forefront. In this patient population, approximately 10% of the patients have factors related to the underlying causes. These are primary hyperaldosteronism (excess of aldosterone hormone), renovascular diseases (renal artery stenosis, fibromuscular dysplasia), thyroid disorders and pheochromocytoma (excess hormone secretion from the adrenal gland). These conditions should definitely be examined in young hypertension patients.”

"TREATMENT SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO MEDICATION ONLY"

Specialist Dr. Yıldırım said regarding the treatment, “The treatment of patients in this age group is similar to that of patients in the elderly population. Hypertension treatment should not be perceived as just a drug treatment, but should be supported by lifestyle changes and diet-exercise. Limiting the amount of salt consumed, quitting smoking and alcohol use, and losing weight are the basis of the treatment. At least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise should be done per week. If there is an underlying pathological condition (primary hyperaldosteronism, renovascular diseases, thyroid disorders, pheochromocytoma), interventions should be planned for these.”

PAY ATTENTION TO THESE VALUES TO MAKE A DIAGNOSIS!

Yıldırım, regarding the diagnosis process, said, “If your average blood pressure (HBPM) value measured at home is greater than 135/85 mmHg, if your average blood pressure on a 24-hour blood pressure monitor (ABPM) is greater than 130/80 mmHg, if it is greater than 135/85 mmHg during the day and greater than 120/70 mmHg at night, you will be diagnosed with hypertension. The target blood pressure value for a hypertensive patient should be less than 130/80 mmHg. In order not to have hypertension, weight should be lost, regular exercise should be done and smoking and alcohol consumption should be completely stopped.”
