Spots on your face may be a sign of lupus! It can affect many organs

Symptoms may not be limited to skin rash.
Although lupus is recognized by a butterfly-shaped rash on the face , the symptoms are not limited to this. Prolonged fatigue, unexplained fever, joint pain, mouth sores and extreme sensitivity to the sun are among the common symptoms. Hair loss and kidney dysfunction may also occur in some patients. Specialist Dr. Füsun Topçugil adds, “Our patients often apply to our polyclinic due to prolonged fatigue or joint swelling. Since lupus can progress insidiously, it is important to pay attention to these findings.” Blood tests can be performed in the diagnosis of lupus. In particular, positive results from autoantibody tests such as the ANA test and anti-dsDNA test cause patients to use the term “positive lupus”. Positive antibody tests alone may not provide a definitive diagnosis. They should be evaluated together with clinical findings and other tests. During the diagnosis phase, a urine test and, if necessary, a biopsy can also be performed. Skin rash or joint tenderness provide important clues during the doctor’s examination.

Will it get better with treatment?
Lupus can be kept under control for a long time with modern drug options and regular follow-up. Corticosteroid drugs, treatments that suppress the immune system and antimalarial drugs are frequently used. Dr. Topçugil says, “The aim of lupus treatment is to reduce the severity of the disease and prevent organ damage. In this way, many patients can live an active life for years.” Reminding that the disease can also affect pregnancy, Specialist Dr. Füsun Topçugil emphasizes, “Women planning a pregnancy in the active period should definitely be under the follow-up of a doctor. Pregnancies planned under control progress much more safely.”

It is possible to manage your illness in daily life
Lupus patients need to be conscious about lifestyle changes. Reducing stress in daily life is also effective in reducing attacks of the disease. Prolonged exposure to the sun can trigger skin rashes. Therefore, it is recommended to use sunscreens with a high protection factor. At the same time, it is recommended to quit smoking as it can negatively affect the course of the disease. Including foods rich in omega-3 and antioxidants in the diet, regular sleep and stress management also play a supportive role in controlling the disease. Specialist Dr. Füsun Topçugil warns her patients, “We always plan the treatment process of our patients diagnosed with lupus individually and closely monitor them with regular check-ups. Do not neglect to consult a specialist in any case of doubt.”
