Warning from the expert: 'Advanced varicose veins can be life-threatening'

Varicose veins are a common vascular disease caused by enlargement of the leg veins. Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist Dr. Murat İlkar Gelişen stated that varicose veins are particularly common in women over the age of 40, adding, "Hormonal factors are thought to play a significant role in this condition."
There is a familial predisposition in 30 percent of cases.Specialist Dr. Gelişimen emphasized that genetics play a role in the development of varicose veins, saying, "There's a familial predisposition in approximately 30 percent of cases. Standing or sitting still for long periods also increases the risk."
SYMPTOMS AND RISKSExpert Dr. Gelişimen noted that patients with varicose veins often experience leg pain, swelling, a burning sensation, night cramps, and restlessness, emphasizing that the condition shouldn't be considered solely an aesthetic issue. Gelişimen added, "In advanced and widespread varicose veins, serious conditions such as thrombophlebitis, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism can develop. These conditions can lead to respiratory failure and even death."
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT METHODGelişimen, noting that varicose veins are diagnosed through a physical examination and venous color Doppler ultrasound, explained that different treatment methods are successfully applied today depending on the stage of the disease. He continued, "Effective results can be achieved thanks to modern techniques such as sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, laser or radiofrequency ablation, and vein sealing. Varicose vein treatment is quite successful if the appropriate method is chosen by an experienced surgeon."
Reminding that there is no recurrence in the same vein after treatment, but new varicose veins may develop in other parts of the legs, Specialist Dr. Gelişen stated that compression stockings slow the progression of the disease but are not curative.
Specialist Dr. Gelişimen, offering advice on preventing varicose veins, stated, "To prevent the formation of varicose veins, it's important to walk regularly, swim, lose weight, and avoid standing for long periods. If you notice previously absent green veins, pain, or swelling in your legs, you should definitely consult a cardiovascular surgeon."
