Who is Pınar Kür?

Pınar Kür, a prominent author, translator, and academic in Turkish literature, has died at the age of 82. Kür reflected Türkiye's historical periods in her works. For this reason, her first four novels, including "Tomorrow, Tomorrow," published in 1979 and recounting the March 12 coup period, were ordered confiscated and destroyed. Her books were later cleared by court order.
Her novel "The Woman to Be Hanged", which depicts the social and sexual oppression of women and was banned for this reason, was adapted for the big screen by Başar Sabuncu.
Her mother, İsmet Kür, was a Turkish language and literature teacher, and her father, Behram Kür, was a French and mathematics teacher. After completing her high school education at Robert College, she completed her undergraduate studies at Queens College and Boğaziçi University. She then earned her doctorate in comparative literature from the Sorbonne.
Her novel "The Woman to Be Hanged" was confiscated for "obscenity." She became an English instructor at Istanbul University's School of Foreign Languages. She also worked as a faculty member in the media and communication systems department at Istanbul Bilgi University. In May 2013, she received an honorary award at the Ankara Story Days. The Pınar Kür Private Archive is held by the Women's Works Library and Information Center Foundation.
