Bozyazı Shores: Tranquil Paradise of the Mediterranean
The Bozyazı coast of Mersin, famous for its most mysterious and natural beauties, is home to one of the most valuable beaches in the Mediterranean. If you want to discover natural life and dive into the depths of the sea, you should definitely explore the coast of Bozyazı! 🌊🏖️
Bozyazı is a wonderful region located southeast of Mersin and contains all the colors of nature. Kızılliman Cape and the surrounding coastline are located east of Anamur Cape, the southernmost tip of Turkey. It is bordered by Bozyazı's agricultural areas to the west and the points where Karaharnup Creek flows into the sea to the east. Leaning against the Taurus Mountains, this region offers both natural life and a unique sea view.
The Bozyazı coast is a paradise full of maquis communities and forests specific to the Mediterranean. Maquis plants densely found in the coastal areas and red pine, juniper and fir mixed forests in the north offer a natural diversity. The coasts are generally surrounded by steep cliffs and there are sea caves among these rocks. Especially the caves where Mediterranean seals live reveal how valuable this region is in terms of ecosystem.
The coast of Bozyazı is one of the areas where the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) can be seen. This area in western Mersin is home to one of the most populous and breeding Mediterranean monk seal colonies in Turkey. The seals use the protected rocky areas of Bozyazı intensively, which highlights the need for protection of the area. If you are lucky, you can watch the seals at sea and witness the life of this rare species.
The coast of Bozyazı is a point where agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing and tourism come together. While vegetable and banana cultivation are among the most common agricultural activities in the region, sheep and cattle breeding is also done to a limited extent. However, tourism has also been developing rapidly in recent years! While Bozyazı attracts the attention of local tourists in particular, second home projects in the region are increasing. Although tourism investments threaten natural areas, it is expected that conservation efforts in the region will provide this balance.
The Bozyazı coast is under serious threat, especially due to illegal and excessive trawling. Illegal fishing with explosives also harms the ecosystem of the region. In addition, increasing tourism and second home construction are among the factors that can threaten the habitats of seals. Therefore, it is very important to protect the region with sustainable tourism.
A number of important projects are being carried out to protect the Bozyazı coast. The METU Marine Sciences Institute and Underwater Research Association (SAD-AFAG) is monitoring the marine and coastal ecosystem in the region and is working to protect the Mediterranean monk seal. In 1999, a no-fishing zone (NDA) was proposed on the shores of Kızılliman Cape and this area was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and placed under protection. In addition, important steps have been taken to protect the Mediterranean monk seal as well as sea creatures such as dusky groupers and groupers. Such measures are helping to revitalize the marine ecosystem in the region.
Bozyazı is connected to Mersin province and is very easy to reach by road. You can reach Bozyazı in about a 2-hour drive from Mersin city center. If you want to explore the natural life and see this region that is home to Mediterranean seals, Bozyazı shores should definitely be on your list!
As a result , the Bozyazı coast offers the most beautiful examples of natural beauty and marine life. This area, one of the untouched corners of the Mediterranean, is a paradise for both nature lovers and those interested in marine life. With the continuation of conservation efforts, this special area will be protected sustainably for both locals and visitors. If you are looking for a peaceful holiday in nature, the Bozyazı coast is waiting for you! 🌟

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA): Steps to Protect Nature 🌿: Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) is a concept used to define sensitive areas that need to be protected and where endangered or limited-distribution species live. These areas are critical for the continuity of biodiversity.
What is a KBA? KBAs are determined by the following criteria: Endangered species Narrow-range species Ecological integrity Uniqueness. KBA Studies in Turkey: 305 KBAs were determined in Turkey with the study published in 2006. A new program was launched in 2018 to update these areas.
