M1 traffic LIVE: Horror crash closes major motorway in 'serious' incident

A major UK motorway has closed this morning after a serious crash. Motorists on the M1 face severe delays as both directions between J41 and J40 near Wakefield have been closed. According to our Inrix traffic system, it was reported at 8.15 today (July 2).
It said: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to serious accident on M1 in both directions from J41 A650 (Carrgate) to J40 A638 Wakefield Road ( Ossett/ Wakefield).
"Traffic is now held in both directions."

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust has said it sent ambulances to the scene of the collision. The Express has asked how many people required medical attention.
West Yorkshire Police has said the southbound M1 around J41 (Carr Gate/East Ardsley) has closed as emergency services deal with a "serious" road traffic collision.
The force said the closure was likely to remain in place for some time and motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
National Highways Yorkshire has said the M1 northbound has reopened between J40 and J41 near Wakefield.
The southbound carriageway remains closed and is likely to stay that way for several hours as an investigation is carried out.
National Higways Yorkshire is advising motorists to allow extra journey time.
