Today in Spain: A roundup of the latest news on Wednesday

Opposition party leader "demands respect and integration" from migrants, anti-migrant unrest in Murcia dies down, Spain enters the dog days of summer and more news on Wednesday July 16th.

Opposition party leader "demands respect and integration" from migrants

The leader of the People's Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has addressed immigrants living in Spain to "demand respect and integration" and to warn them that "those who do not do so should know that they are not welcome," amid a public debate about the racist incidents in Torre Pacheco (Murcia), where extremist groups have mobilised to beat up immigrants in recent days.

The opposition party’s comments also come a week after Vox - who accuse the PP of being too soft on immigration - called for 8 million migrants to be deported.

"I condemn all forms of violence, regardless of who commits it," Feijóo said, but went on to say that "those who have crossed our borders to break the law do not represent us. Nor do those who break the law, having been born here."

Anti-migrant unrest in Murcia dies down

Spanish far-right groups failed to gather even a hundred people at the anti-immigration rally called on Tuesday night in the Murcian town of Torre Pacheco, where for the past four days there have been violent encounters after two North African men allegedly beat up an old man.

Many of those present were local residents, meaning that the huge callout on far-right Telegram groups to go to Torre Pachecho to confront migrants failed.

The heavy police presence both in the town centre and at the entrances to the municipality acted as a deterrent and successfully blocked the passage of the violent individuals who, despite the tight controls, attempted to reach the demonstration.

Spain enters the dog days of summer

The heat is set to intensify this week in Spain as temperatures will reach 40C again in several regions of the country.

Granada, Seville, Ciudad Real, Madrid, Cáceres, Jaén, Toledo, Albacete are the cities where the mercury will hover around or surpass the 40C mark, but temperatures will be above 30C everywhere in the mainland and the two archipelagos except for in the northern coast.

Eleven of Spain’s 17 regions have weather alerts for heat.

Barça star Yamal faces probe into dwarf entertainers at 18th birthday

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal is facing an investigation regarding the presence of a group of people with dwarfism as entertainers at his 18th birthday party last weekend, Spain's Ministry of Social Rights told AFP Tuesday.

The winger celebrated with a private event in Olivella, around 50 kilometres west of Barcelona, which the ministry asked the prosecutor's office to probe, following a complaint from the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE).

Yamal turned 18 on July 13th, the day after his party on Saturday night, which many of his team-mates attended, along with celebrities from the music world including Bizarrap and Bad Gyal.

"No one disrespected us, we were allowed to work in peace," said one of the performers anonymously on Catalan radio station RAC1, saying there were four of them present.

"We're normal people who dedicate ourselves to what we love doing in an absolutely legal way...

"For a couple of years these people (the ADEE) have wanted to harm us, they want to prevent us from doing what we like, but they have not offered any work or training to those who are affected...

"All this fuss has come about purely because it was Lamine Yamal's party."

The performer said they dance, deliver drinks and do magic tricks to entertain guests at the events they work at.
