In the Sirens Finale, Devon and Simone Choose Themselves

In the Sirens Finale, Devon and Simone Choose Themselves
preview for Sirens - Official Trailer (Netflix)

Spoilers below.

The final episode of Netflix’s new dark comedy Sirens begins with our two main characters, Devon DeWitt (Meghann Fahy) and Simone DeWitt (Milly Alcock), sitting in a hospital waiting room. They’re there because, in the previous episode, Simone’s ex, Ethan (Glenn Howerton), rather comically, fell off a cliff after she rejected his marriage proposal. He’s in pretty bad shape, with two broken legs, a broken arm, broken ribs, and a concussion.

While waiting to hear back on how he’s doing, Devon and Simone have a cute sister moment after spending all season bickering. Devon reveals the struggles she’s had being their dad’s sole caretaker, and Simone tells her to leave home and finally live her own life. Simone then shares that her boss, the kooky socialite and bird-lover Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore), has just offered her a promotion. She’ll now run the Kell’s foundation in New York and encourages Devon to accompany her.

Meanwhile, Michaela (also affectionately known as Kiki) is getting ready to host the posh gala at her house that she’s been preparing for all season. But before the festivities take place, we see her boxing up all of Simone’s stuff for Goodwill donation because she’s actually planning on firing her. That’s because she found out that Simone and her husband Peter (Kevin Bacon) kissed in the previous episode. When Kiki confronts Simone, Simone assures her that Peter came onto her and that she pushed him away. But Kiki’s mind is made up.

In another scene, Devon decides to take Simone’s advice and start living her own life. But when she tells her dad that she’s planning to go on a month-long trip to Palm Beach with her sailor boo, he forgets who she is in the middle of their conversation, confusing her for Simone. This reminds her that he needs her because his memory is too bad for him to be left alone for that long, and she decides not to go after all.

Back at the house, Kiki tells Peter that Simone got fired because she stole her earrings, but he doesn’t believe her. In the next scene, he and Simone meet on the beach, and he tells her that he’s in love with her. Simone then tells him that Kiki knows about their kiss, and that she has a photo to prove it. Peter then has the house manager retrieve it from the safe and destroy it.

In the middle of the gala, Devon confronts Kiki for firing Simone and insists that there’s no way she stole from her because she “doesn’t even take the free samples from Trader Joe’s.” She then accuses Kiki of being a cult leader and a murderer. All season, Devon has been suspicious of her and convinced that she killed Peter’s first wife, Jocelyn. But this theory is quickly debunked when Kiki explains that Jocelyn lives as a recluse on an island off Washington State because she’s been left disfigured by plastic surgery. And to respect her privacy, they don’t speak about her in public. She notably didn’t address the cult leader accusations, but we quickly move on.

We then cut to a dramatic scene where Peter asks Kiki for a divorce. He’s upset that she would keep incriminating photos of him locked in a safe, and she says that they were merely an insurance policy. He says he wants to leave their marriage because Simone makes him feel “alive,” and she tells him that leaving her for a younger woman makes him a “walking cliché.”

Kiki agrees to the divorce, but asks to keep the aviary because no one can take care of the birds but her. He responds, “Simone knows,” and we then see her slowly come down the stairs dressed in a ball gown, already primed to take Kiki’s place at the gala. Kiki leaves, and Simone and Peter make their first appearance as a couple at the party.

When the sisters finally reunite, Devon judges Simone for taking someone else’s husband, while Simone simply sees it as “a door that’s been opened.” Devon tells her that she’s decided to return to Buffalo to take care of their dad. They exchange another heartfelt moment and make peace with the fact that they’re going their separate ways, but make loose plans to meet up sometime in the future.

After leaving the island, Devon runs into Kiki on the ferry. Devon apologizes for causing a scene at the party, and Kiki accepts. Kiki also encourages her to cash the $10,000 check she gave her at the beginning of the season. Then they both hypothesize about what will happen to Simone now that she’s with Peter, but they leave off on an ambiguous note.

We end the episode with Simone, still in her gown, standing outside and gazing off into the distance, preparing herself for her new life as the new Mrs. Kell.
