HBO’s new Sunday-night drama, Task, comes from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby and follows a tense story of family, crime, and grief in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The drama pairs Mark Ruffalo, playing a former priest-turned-FBI agent, with Tom Pelphrey as a trash collector desperate to support his family, even if it means orchestrating violent robberies.

Ingelsby has described the project as deeply personal. “It’s where I live now, it’s where I grew up, it’s where I was raised, and it’s where a lot of the important relationships in my life were formed,” he told Vanity Fair in a May 2025 interview. “It’s also a place that I feel like I can speak about and write about with some conviction and authority.”

He was also drawn to the show’s central dynamic between characters, recalling one of his favorite films, Heat. “It was a collision course of these two men, and you loved and cared about both of them. And you knew those things couldn’t coexist. That is the tension of the movie: When are they going to collide? And when they collide, what’s going to happen?”

The series premieres Sunday, September 7, and new episodes will roll out weekly.
