Good Morning Britain halted for huge Angela Rayner update as ITV fans rage

More bad news was delivered for Angela Rayner on Good Morning Britain on Friday. The Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary has been under scrutiny this week after it came to light that she had not paid enough tax when purchasing an £800,000 flat in Hove earlier this summer.

Arrangements on her family home in Greater Manchester meant she should have paid a higher rate. She has branded her actions as a "mistake", blaming it on initial legal advice that failed to "properly take account" of the situation. Rayner says she has now contacted HMRC to work out the tax she needs to pay, and referred herself for investigation by the PM's standards adviser. The decision from the board into whether Angela broke the ministerial code when she underpaid Stamp Duty by £40,000 is expected today - which should lead to a decision from the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, about whether or not to keep her in office.

Presenter Adil Ray pointed out that Starmer has already said he is standing by his friend and colleague, although the law firm has since spoken out to say that they did not offer advice.

He added: "Although we are talking about Angela Rayner here, a very powerful force in the Labour party. It is going to be a very interesting day."

News correspondent, Louisa James, then took over the report as she said: "Yeah, and I think 24 hours ago it was actually very difficult to say whether Angela Rayner would keep hold of her job, but this morning I would say that things are looking decidedly more dicey for her. That is because, as you say, a key bit of her defense is being called into question."

The reporter added: "The reason that Angela Rayner's position is looking a little bit more precarious this morning is because of what felt like a bit of a change in tone from her boss, the Prime Minister, who, in an interview yesterday, was a bit less enthusiastic than he had been in Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday.

"Although he did not say whether he would sack Angela Rayner if the report by the standards adviser, which is due back today, finds that she broke the ministerial code."

The verdict is expected to be delivered later today, but fans at home seem to think that Ms Rayner could get off scot-free as they commented on the show's social media posts. On X/Twitter, one wrote: "Of course he'll keep her... No backbone to sack her."

Another echoed: "He won't get rid of her, he will say she made a genuine mistake, she was given wrong advice but has retified it and will pay what she owed."

One more added: "She’s lied and cheated as per her own words. She has to go."
