Scottish ice hockey player died after falling from third floor of hotel in Ibiza

The 19-year-old who died after falling from the third floor of the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio, has been named as Garry Kelly, an ice hockey player from Dundee.

The young man, who suffered multiple injuries and was in critical condition and required cardiopulmonary resuscitation, died at the scene on Sunday July 20th.

"Everyone at the club, including players, staff, management, and owners, is heartbroken by this tragic news. Gary was an enormously talented and charismatic individual with a bright future ahead of him. His loss will impact many in the ice hockey community and beyond. He will be greatly missed. We respect and support the family's request for privacy at this very difficult time," the Dundee Stars club wrote in a statement.

Celebrities sign manifesto in support of Sánchez's leadership

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez hasn't been having the best time, having had to deal with unprecedented events while in office, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the devastating floods in Valencia, a national power outage, and now corruption scandals.

Despite this, 100 influential people from the national cultural and political world have signed a manifesto in support of Pedro Sánchez's continued leadership. Among them are singer Joan Manuel Serrat, film director Pedro Almodóvar, singer Miguel Ríos and TV presenter Andreu Buenafuente, as well as politicians such as Manuel Castells, Alberto Garzón, and Leire Pajín.

The one hundred signatories express their support for the "continuity of the legislature, headed by the progressive coalition government, with an updated programme of strong and concrete measures against corruption, with social and civil rights advances that improve the lives of citizens".

Girona to host Ryder Cup in 2031

Golf's Ryder Cup will return to Spain in 2031, organisers announced Tuesday.

Camiral Golf and Wellness, close to Girona in Catalonia, will host the 48th edition of the biennial competition between Europe and the United States.

"The stunning Costa Brava and Barcelona will provide the backdrop for the 2031 Ryder Cup, welcoming international visitors from across the world to a region renowned for its breathtaking coastline, world-class hospitality and vibrant cultural heritage," said Ryder Cup Europe in a statement.

Spain hosted the Ryder Cup at Valderrama in Andalusia in 1997, with Europe emerging victorious under Seve Ballesteros as captain.

Mayor of Catalan town bans burqini

The mayor of the Catalan town of Ripoll and leader of the far-right Catalan Alliance party has banned the wearing of burkinis in public swimming pools in her municipality.

Orriols, who has gained notoriety in recent years for her openly Islamophobic policies , has banned this swimsuit that completely covers the body of Muslim women.

Orriols explained that this is not an attack on Islam, but rather a matter of safety, as the burkini is dangerous for lifeguards.

"It's a matter of safety, because if a wearer has to be rescued wearing this garment, it makes any rescue very difficult. Therefore, it's a purely technical criterion ," she stated.
