Elections will take place in the federal capital Vienna on Sunday. Around 1.4 million people are called upon to decide on the future composition of the municipal council, state parliament, and district councils. The election was originally scheduled to take place in the fall. However, the governing parties, the SPÖ and NEOS, decided in January to bring the election forward. Polling stations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The 2020 election saw almost only winners. The SPÖ received 41.6 percent (up 2 percentage points). Its coalition partner at the time, the Greens, gained around 3 percentage points to 14.8 percent. The ÖVP climbed by 11 percentage points to 20.4 percent. The NEOS achieved 7.5 percent, an increase of 1.3 percentage points. The FPÖ, on the other hand, lost 23.7 percentage points, coming in last with 7 percent.

District representatives are also elected

A total of 100 seats are up for grabs in the city parliament. Not only will a new municipal council and state parliament be elected, but also the 23 district councils. Unlike the municipal council elections, EU citizens are also allowed to vote.
