A lower court had prohibited this with a preliminary injunction.

The legal dispute is expected to continue – even though employees of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have access to the data in the meantime. The Supreme Court's decision was made by a majority of six conservative justices. The three more liberal female justices dissented.

The agency's data includes social security numbers , which are particularly important in the USA , dates of birth, account numbers, addresses and, in some cases, information on pension payments or even particularly sensitive health data.

His fate is the subject of a high-profile legal battle in the United States between the government and the man's lawyers. According to insiders, the United States has banned its nuclear suppliers from selling equipment for Chinese nuclear power plants. The U.S. Department of Commerce ordered the suspension of the relevant licenses in recent days, four people familiar with the matter told Reuters. This applies to the export of parts and equipment used in nuclear power plants. Two of the people said that deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars were affected.

The US and China are at loggerheads. The world's two largest economies agreed on a 90-day deal on May 12 to roll back some of the triple-digit tariffs they imposed on each other. However, this deal is on shaky ground. It is unclear whether Thursday's phone call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will affect export licenses. According to Trump, further trade talks with China are planned for next Monday in London.
