A doctor in Santa Fe was sentenced for homicide and serious injuries in two home births

A Santa Fe obstetrician has been convicted of manslaughter and aggravated assault after performing two home births that resulted in the death of one patient, while another suffered the loss of her child, along with serious injuries to her uterus.

The woman was sentenced to 5 years in prison and 10 years of disqualification from practicing medicine for the crimes of negligent homicide and negligent injuries in real competition as the perpetrator. The sentence was handed down at the Criminal Justice Center by judges Paula Álvarez, Florentino Malaponte and Carlos Leiva.

According to what was learned during the trial, in May 2015 Giménez attended to a patient at her home, to whom he had previously stated that she could give birth from home "without major risks to her life or that of her fetus."

However, according to La Capital, the woman's health deteriorated during labor, so the doctor decided to take her to the hospital in her private car.

However, halfway through the journey the patient became ill and died , reported Noticias Argentinas. At the hospital she underwent an emergency Caesarean section and was diagnosed with uterine injuries and that the fetus had also died.

A similar case occurred two years later when in March 2017 Giménez also advised his patient that she could carry out a home birth without suffering complications, the same version he had given to the woman who died, reported the Argentine News Agency .

After several hours of labor, the obstetrician noticed that her patient's health was once again getting worse , so she took her car again and took her to the Eva Perón hospital. Upon arriving at the medical institution, they had to perform an emergency cesarean section, where they announced that the fetus had died and that the woman had very serious injuries to her uterus .

Thus, after two scandalous situations, an investigation was launched. Finally, almost 10 years after the first case , the doctor was sentenced to five years of effective prison, plus 10 years of disqualification from practicing medicine.
