Devers warns Boston

Devers warns Boston

Rafael Devers is the Red Sox's designated hitter. And the Dominican isn't interested in changing positions again.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since Triston Casas was ruled out for the season, Devers said Red Sox management approached him about taking Boston's first base job.

But the three-time All-Star doesn't think it's in his best interest to make another position change after being asked to move from third base to designated hitter in spring training after the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to third base.

“They asked me the question. They gave me another position in spring training. It looks really bad that they're asking me to play another position now,” Devers said.

“I know I'm a player, but I can't play every position,” he added. “I can't adapt to a position like any other player. If it's first base, they know I'm not going to play right away. It's not a good decision.”

Devers said he spoke with director of baseball operations Craig Breslow about the possibility of playing first base. “I don’t know what that person is doing to me,” Devers said of Breslow. “He played baseball… I think he also understands that it’s very difficult to change positions like that.”

"Let them do their job, find another player, and go to the market. That would be the best decision," Devers said.

"I'm a little stubborn, and I don't think I can change my mindset this time," he remarked.
