Israel: Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, who is handling the corruption case against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been dismissed.

Israel's cabinet voted unanimously on Monday to dismiss the country's attorney general, Gali Baharav-Miara , according to local media reports citing Justice Minister Yariv Levin.

"His dismissal would mark one of the most significant steps in Netanyahu's (the prime minister) effort to restructure the country's judicial system . It could also spark a clash between the elected government and Israel's Supreme Court," The Washington Post warned.
Since taking office in early 2022, Baharav-Miara has clashed with Benjamin Netanyahu's government on several occasions after reporting alleged irregularities by some of the ministers, among other issues.
Before the vote, Baharav-Miara's office called her possible dismissal "illegal" and said it indicated that Netanyahu "is seeking a legal advisor who will comply with the government's demands and legitimize illegal actions."

According to the US media outlet, cabinet ministers said her dismissal was necessary because "the government has no confidence in Prosecutor Gali Baharav-Miara as Attorney General," according to a draft resolution issued last week.
The Israeli High Court ruled that the attorney general's dismissal will not take effect until the judges rule on the legality of the process.
Israel is currently experiencing a period of tension due to the war in Gaza and the health of the Israeli hostages.
The families of those held captive by Hamas since October 7, 2023, are demanding that the government end the war.
Also on Monday, 550 former Israeli security officials, including several former heads of the Mossad and the Internal Security Agency, as well as diplomats, called on US President Donald Trump to pressure Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza.

" This war has ceased to be a just war and is causing the State of Israel to lose its identity," warned Ami Ayalon, former director of the Shin Bet, the internal security service, in a video released by the same movement to accompany the publication of this letter.
The Israeli army "has long since achieved the two objectives that could be achieved by force: dismantling Hamas's military formations and government," they added.
For the signatories, the main objective is to rescue the hostages. "Hunting the last senior Hamas officials can be done later," but the "hostages cannot wait," insist the former heads of Israel's espionage, intelligence, and general security services.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration said it has a plan to end the war in Gaza that would ensure the return of the captives and send more aid to the Palestinian enclave . This was announced by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff during a meeting with the hostages' families on Saturday.
