Oléron Island: 89-year-old woman drowns in La Brée-les-Bains

On Thursday, July 17, a woman died of cardiac arrest following a drowning outside the supervised swimming area in La Brée-les-Bains.

An 89-year-old woman drowned late Thursday, July 17, outside the supervised swimming area in La Brée-les-Bains, on the island of Oléron. According to information from the Sdis 17 (Departmental Fire and Rescue Service), lifeguards began resuscitation before emergency services arrived.

At 6:05 p.m., a team of six firefighters arrived at the scene to assist the victim. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was declared dead a few minutes later by the Smur (Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service) doctor.

Swimming conditions were good on Thursday: little swell and no current. The cause of the drowning remains unknown. An investigation has been opened.

In two days, this is the second fatal drowning on the island of Oléron and the third in the department with a similar case the same day on the island of Ré .
