Separated by a wall for several centuries, the Grande Côte and the Grande Rue in Croix-Rousse nevertheless form a single axis linking Lyon to the communes of Bresse, Dombes and the north of the Saône. Their evolution took place in parallel to result in two completely different microcosms.

At the time when the Croix-Rousse hill was nothing but fields, vineyards, and countryside, the main axis of the Grande Côte and the Grande Rue already existed. The Grande Côte was then called the Côte Saint-Sébastien and included the Rue des Pierres Plantées, which only appeared much later. The wall separated the slopes of the suburb, but the Porte Saint-Sébastien joined the two streets.

For the people of Lyon, this was the main route to Dombes, Bresse and all the towns north of the Saône. Until the middle of the 18th century, the ramparts prevented access to the banks of the Saône; the only way was via the hill.
