ISS, 68 cases of dengue and 22 of chikungunya since the beginning of the year

From the beginning of the year to June 30th there There have been 68 confirmed cases of human infection in Italy dengue virus (all associated with foreign travel) and 22 cases confirmed human infection with chikungunya virus (all associated with trips abroad, increasing compared to last year year). These are the updated data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) on the occasion of the conference 'Preparation and Counteraction to endemic and epidemic arbovirosis in Italy' which brings together national experts (Ministry of Health, Izs, ISS) and Regions. "Arbovirosis represents a group of important diseases for Public Health and require a true One approach Health for prevention and control", explains Anna Teresa Palamara, who heads the infectious diseases department of the ISS. Of the 68 confirmed cases of human dengue virus infection in Italy, most were contracted in Central and Southern Italy America and in countries of South East Asia. Of the 22 cases of human infection by chikungunya virus in Italy, the majority have been contracted in Madagascar and on Reunion Island and in Sri Lanka. Four confirmed cases of the virus have also been reported Zika all imported. Among endemic arbovirosis, as of June 30 2025, 12 cases of TBE were reported (all autochthonous, no deaths) and 5 cases of infection by Toscana virus (no death). Although a sporadic case has been reported West Nile confirmed in months of low transmission, begin the first reports of viral circulation in mosquito pools with activation of transfusion control measures in provinces of Oristano and Venice.
