Arnaldo Pomodoro

Arnaldo Pomodoro , born in Morciano di Romagna , in the province of Rimini , died on June 23, 1926. He was 99 years old and was considered one of the greatest contemporary artists , especially in the field of sculpture . Pomodoro was not only appreciated in Italy but also abroad and was famous above all for his particular bronze spheres , the material he preferred for his works, which break down, "break" and open up before the spectator, who is led to the search and discovery of the internal mechanism, in a contrast between the perfect smoothness of the form and the hidden complexity of the interior . After studying to be a surveyor, Pomodoro devoted himself almost immediately to sculpture, for which he gradually developed, at the beginning of the fifties, an enormous passion.

Slowly his characteristic, informal language evolves, adapting from time to time to the characteristics of the material used : first gold and silver, for jewelry, then iron, wood, cement and bronze, which will become his basic material for small-scale works and for the monumental sculptures that have made him famous. In 1991, his work "Solar Disk" was placed in front of the Youth Palace in Moscow, as a gift to the Soviet Union from the Italian government in the post-Cold War thaw. The following year, 1992, another large-scale work, 'Papyrus', was placed in Darmstadt, Germany, in the gardens of the new Post and Telecommunications Building.

In 1995 he created a sculpture in memory of the late great director Federico Fellini , commissioned by the Municipality of Rimini, while in 1998 he designed the portal of the Cathedral of Cefalù , in Sicily. In addition to many artistic awards, Pomodoro received an honorary degree in Letters from Trinity College, University of Dublin, and an honorary degree in Architecture and Engineering from the University of Ancona. An honorary member of the Accademia di Brera , in Milan, since 1993, and in 1994 he received the Award of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, he was a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic , and a Gold Medal for meritorious work in culture and art.
