Javier Milei, live: the latest measures of the Government
Just minutes after announcing the appointments by decree of Ariel Lijo and Manuel García- Mansilla to the Supreme Court of Justice, the Government again appeared to be as confident about the future of both in the highest court as after José Mayans warned, last November, that they would be “overthrown” if they were appointed in this way. “Even if the Senate deals with them and votes against them, these judges will be sitting on the Court until the end of the legislative period,” they said on the first floor of the Casa Rosada. They stated this way The validity of both appointments by decree until November 30 of this year .
In November, when Mayans, head of the Union for the Fatherland (UP) bloc, warned the head of ministers, Guillermo Francos , during his visit to the Senate about what would happen with these appointments by decree, the Casa Rosada doubled the bet and challenged: “The Senate cannot overturn a commission appointment ”. They added that, “in fact, not even the president can”. They concluded by saying that “once they are appointed, they will remain so until the end of the legislative period. It doesn’t matter what happens”.
President Javier Milei 's decision to appoint Ariel Lijo and Manuel García-Mansilla to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court of Justice has further strained his relationship with Mauricio Macri, head of Pro, as the decisive stages of this year's electoral process approach.
Macri, who last week expressed his anger against Santiago Caputo , Milei's main advisor, after the executive director of the National Ports and Navigation Agency, Iñaki Arreseygor , accused him of plotting to sabotage the failed bidding for the Paraguay-Paraná waterway, had already made explicit six months ago his rejection of the President's idea of promoting Lijo's candidacy. "It's a mistake; I told Javier that I didn't agree," Macri remarked last August, after he headed the Pro relaunch event in La Boca.
Three months after the appointment, Javier Milei signed the decree appointing Alejandro Oxenford as Argentine ambassador to the United States . “Make America & Argentina Great Again,” wrote the spokesman, Manuel Adorni, when announcing it, in reference to the American president, Donald Trump.
The new minister also said: “Thank you, President and Foreign Minister [Gerardo Werthein] for your trust. I assume this responsibility with honor and with great enthusiasm to represent my country before the United States.”
As announced hours before, the Government made official in the Official Gazette the appointment of Ariel Lijo and Manuel García-Mansilla as judges of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. The appointment takes place in a context in which Congress is in recess - until Saturday - and after both nominations failed in the Senate.
Through Decree 137/2025, the Executive Branch established: “ Manuel José García-Mansilla and Ariel Oscar Lijo are hereby appointed, in accordance with the terms of article 99, paragraph 19 of the National Constitution, to the position of judge of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation .” For his part, he questioned the Senate, saying that it did not carry out a serious and objective analysis, and argued that “it is imperative” for the President to intervene.
