It's unclear what went wrong. Was it a moment of inattention, a delayed reaction, or perhaps a mistake that cost lives? On Monday, July 28, before noon, at an unguarded crossing in Dziękonie (Podlaskie Voivodeship), an Opel Meriva passenger car drove directly under a freight locomotive. The driver died at the scene.
The tragedy occurred around 11 a.m. at the intersection of a county road and the Białystok–Ełk railway line. The crossing had no barriers, only a "Stop" sign and a St. Andrew's cross. Despite this, the blue Opel drove onto the tracks directly in front of an oncoming PKP Cargo locomotive .
The machine struck the passenger side of the car. The force was so powerful that the car was pulled under the wheels and dragged along the tracks. The roar was heard throughout the area.
A 38-year-old man was behind the wheel. He was driving alone. He died at the scene.
It is unknown why he didn't stop. Why did he drive onto the tracks? Was he distracted? Did he not see the approaching locomotive? That remains unknown. The detailed circumstances of the accident will now be investigated by the police under the supervision of the prosecutor's office.
Emergency services were on the scene for many hours. The road and railway line were blocked. Intercity passengers were forced to transfer to buses. Delays reached up to three hours.
