Avoid the crowds in Croatia here. A picturesque island in a warm sea.

Avoid the crowds in Croatia here. A picturesque island in a warm sea.

This unique place lies between the islands of Dugi Otok and Ugljan. It's so beautiful that even Robert Makłowicz , a true Croatian enthusiast, once admired it. Just 30 km from Zadar, you'll discover Veli Iž on the island of Iž, a quiet town without crowds and with picturesque views. This small town on the Adriatic Sea is perfect for a week or longer.

Veli Iz in Croatia without crowds

If you associate Croatia with crowded beaches and high prices, it's time to change that. There are still holiday destinations in this country that haven't yet been explored by many visitors. They are frequented primarily by sailors seeking secluded villages, as well as locals. The inhabitants of Iž Island mainly engage in fishing and farming. Furthermore, they can count on only two villages connected by a paved road – Mali Iž and the aforementioned Veli Iž.

The island's main attraction is the fishing port, while the town's focal point is the Church of St. Peter and Paul and the Cultural Center. Old stone houses and narrow streets add to the charm of this place. Those who enjoy interesting attractions can visit the town museum, and sea lovers can enjoy the wide swimming area. The local marina is open year-round, so you can sail there even after the season.

An alternative to Zadar

The island of Iž and its town, Veli Iž, can be a great alternative to Zadar, which is a popular tourist destination, including Poles. In summer, tourists often lounge on the city's beaches and stroll along the famous promenade. The streets of the Old Town become crowded and very stuffy. Many places also feature music and are swarming with local vendors. If this atmosphere isn't for you, or you just want a break from it, even for a moment, this small Croatian paradise is a great option for a trip.

The entire island of Iž is not only peaceful but also lush with greenery – it boasts nearly 70,000 olive trees. The local olive oil mill produces high-quality products. The island is also renowned for its interesting ceramics and pottery, and in local restaurants, you can sample the famous local delicacy, peka. Telašćica Nature Park and Kornati National Park are also close by.
