Rzeszów University of Technology will broadcast a connection with the International Space Station (ISS) during the first Polish technological and scientific mission IGNIS. The telebridge with the Polish astronaut will last 10 minutes, during which Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski will answer a few questions.
"It is of great importance to us because, firstly, we can organize such an event. Secondly, we are starting to be seen as an academic center with important and high competences in the field of space technology," said Dr. Hab. Eng. Andrzej Majka, professor at the Rzeszów University of Technology, head of the Department of Aeronautical and Space Engineering.
Rzeszów University of Technology is - alongside the University of Wrocław - one of two universities selected by the Polish Space Agency (POLSA) to transmit a connection with a Polish astronaut during the IGNIS mission.
"Rzeszów University of Technology proved during the recruitment process that it deserves to be part of this historic moment. From the beginning of the selection process, it stood out from other universities, among others, because it has very good conditions for conducting direct communication with the space station, and such an option was considered at the beginning," explains Anna Bukiewicz-Szul from POLSA.
Ultimately, it turned out that the connection with the station would be made by means of a telebridge. American shortwave radio operators associated with Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) would take care of the contact.
"The signal will be received by one of the six ARISS ground stations located in different places around the world and this signal will be sent to us by telephone," added Bukiewicz-Szul.
The telebridge from the ISS will be the highlight of the educational workshops that will be held at the Rzeszów University of Technology. "The workshops will cover engineering and space technologies. Young people interested in space will come to us. Perhaps someone will decide to study aviation and astronautics with us after this event. We want engaged students who will be able to join the space industry in the future," emphasized Prof. Andrzej Majka.
The connection with the space station will last up to 10 minutes, during which time selected students will ask the Polish astronaut a few questions. The conversation with Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski will be watched by about 400 people.
The launch of the Ax-4 mission with Pole Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski to the International Space Station (ISS) will take place on June 8 at 15:11 Polish time (9:11 in Florida).
As part of Ax-4, in addition to Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, the following will also fly to the ISS: Peggy Whitson (USA) - mission commander, Shubhanshu Shukla (India) - mission pilot, and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) - mission specialist. The Ax-4 crew will spend two weeks on board the ISS. (PAP)
