Rio de Janeiro court charges Oruam with attempted qualified homicide

Rio de Janeiro court charges Oruam with attempted qualified homicide

Public peace, therefore, depends on firm and extreme measures, such as imprisonment, to be preserved. Finally, considering the possibility of escape raised by the accused himself, it is essential to safeguard the enforcement of criminal law and the criminal investigation, given the defiant stance displayed by the defendants and their accomplices. Judge Tula Correa de Mello

In the early hours of July 22, agents from the Narcotics Enforcement Division were executing a search and seizure warrant against a minor accused of drug trafficking, who was reportedly at Oruam's home. After the young man's arrest, the singer and seven others ran to the balcony of the artist's residence and threw rocks at the officers —who had to hide in their patrol car.

The Public Prosecutor's Office filed an attempted murder charge, alleging that Oruam and the others acted "at the risk of killing the officers." In addition to the physical attacks, the singer posted on social media inciting violence against the police and challenging officers to go to the Penha Complex.

"Several stones weighing between 130g and 4.85kg were thrown, some of which, if they had hit a person's head, would have produced an impact of over 9000N, a value well above the threshold for skull fracture (3500-5000N), and could have been lethal. The objects were thrown from a high balcony, with a horizontal range, and hit the place where the victims were. There was repetition of the conduct, which denotes persistence in the behavior even in the face of the potential lethality of the stones," the judge pointed out, in her argument for accepting the MP's complaint.

After the police operation, Oruam remained at large for a few hours, but turned himself in . "I made a mistake. I'm sorry everyone, I'll prove to you that I'm not a criminal. I'll bounce back and then I'll win through my music. Yesterday, I was very upset about everything that happened. I want to tell my fans that I love you very much," he said at the time.

In addition to attempted murder, the singer is charged with drug trafficking, drug trafficking association, qualified resistance, contempt, qualified damage, threats and bodily harm.
