PAN supports the PS candidacy for the Gaia City Council

People-Animals-Nature (PAN) announced this Wednesday its support for the candidacy of João Paulo Correia, from the PS, for the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council, in the Porto district, based on commitments in the environmental and animal welfare areas.
According to a statement from PAN, which Lusa had access to, "political support and understanding is based on the assumption of clear and verifiable programmatic commitments, to be integrated into the municipal governance program."
“Among the agreed measures are the reinforcement of the creation and requalification of green leisure spaces in all parishes, the reconversion of environmentally degraded areas into biodiversity zones and the promotion of multifunctional urban parks with a strong ecological component,” the text reads.
The party also adds that "in the area of animal welfare, commitments were made to create infrastructure dedicated to companion animals, including canine socialization spaces, permanent sterilization programs, and strengthening the capacity to respond to abandonment situations, with the construction of a new shelter."
"The creation of the role of Animal Ombudsman is also planned, to reinforce active listening to the community and promote good practices," says the party of the sole deputy Inês de Sousa Real.
PAN also states that it “will be present at the Municipal Assembly and in the parishes of Mafamude and Santa Marinha, ensuring greater representation of environmental causes, animal protection and social justice.”
"With this collaboration, the PAN of the Porto district affirms its commitment to municipal governance in Vila Nova de Gaia that is more ethical, sustainable, and closer to people, animals, and nature," he notes.
In the race for the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council, the candidacies of André Araújo (CDU — PCP/PEV coalition), João Paulo Correia (PS), Luís Filipe Menezes (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), Daniel Gaio (Volt), João Martins (BE/Livre) and Rui Sequeira (ADN) are already known.
The municipal executive branch is composed of 11 councilors, with the Socialist Party (PS) having nine and the PSD two. The PS also leads the Municipal Assembly with a majority.
The local elections will take place on October 12th.
