Tourist falls into Venice canal while following Google Maps route

Tourist falls into Venice canal while following Google Maps route

A tourist from Poland experienced an unusual — and painful — situation when trying to show what appeared to be a Google Maps navigation error during a visit to Venice, Italy .

Wiktoria Guzenda was following the app's instructions when she was directed to a staircase that led directly to one of the city's famous canals. The moment was captured on video and posted by her on social media .

Watch the video:

“When Google Maps says 'go straight ahead' but you're in Venice,” Wiktoria wrote on Instagram.

The images show the young woman descending the stairs with her cell phone in her hands before slipping and falling into the water, in a scene reminiscent of a slapstick comedy.

Despite the good-humored tone, the accident left its mark: Wiktoria suffered cuts to her legs from the impact of the fall.

The post quickly spread across social media, generating both amusing reactions and criticism of the tourist's actions.

"And what did she think was going to happen going down stone steps straight into the water?" commented one follower. Another was more direct: "This is why you shouldn't follow your GPS without paying attention to your surroundings."

Some users, however, doubted the app was to blame. "She just slipped trying to take a picture on that step," suggested one user.

Accidents like this aren't as rare as they seem: on social media, you can find numerous videos of tourists falling into the Venetian canals. For some, it's even become a trend.
