Zekai Aksakallı is married to Nursel Aksakallı and has two children. Zekai Aksakallı was promoted to lieutenant general at the end of the 2016 Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) meeting. On August 20, 2017, Lieutenant General Zekai Aksakallı became the 2nd Corps Commander.

On July 23, 2020, within the scope of the decisions of the Supreme Military Council (YAŞ), he was retired from his post as "2nd Corps Commander" due to lack of staff.

Born in Erzurum in 1959, Aksakallı came to the fore with his stance against the putschists as the "Special Forces Commander" during the coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

Aksakallı was etched into our memories as one of the most important names who changed the course of the coup attempt. Aksakallı contacted MİT Undersecretary Hakan Fidan many times on the night of the coup attempt. During their phone conversations, Aksakallı shared the names of the FETÖ generals they had predicted with Fidan. Aksakallı made the speech that would change the course of July 15.

GAVE THE ORDER TO ÖMER HALISDEMİR TO "HIT" Aksakallı, who gave the order to Ömer Halisdemir, who has been on duty as a security officer for about 3 years, to shoot the putschist General Semih Terzi, described what happened between him and Halisdemir as follows:

"I contacted Ömer Halisdemir, who was on guard duty at the Special Forces Commander's office, through Guard Sergeant Makbul Uluğ, and instructed him to follow what the putschist leader Colonel Ümit Bak and putschist Lieutenant Colonel Mehmet Ali Çelik were doing within the Special Forces Headquarters and to neutralize them if he found the opportunity. I met with Ömer Halisdemir 8 times to follow up on the situation. Ömer Halisdemir had been serving me as a guard sergeant for about 3 years. Ömer Halisdemir was a soldier I trusted. In our last meeting, I told him that 'Semih Terzi was a traitor and a putschist, that I ordered him to shoot him on behalf of our country and nation, and that this would result in martyrdom, and asked him to forgive me.' He said 'May he be forgiven forever, commander.' We made amends."
