The color of your teeth reveals your health: It's much more than just cavities

Dental technologist Allen Zhang says that changes in tooth color can be an early warning sign. According to the Daily Mail, Zhang says, "If you look at your teeth carefully, you can see early health warnings," adding that such signs can provide clues to prevent life-threatening problems. He points out that regularly checking tooth color with simple tools can benefit long-term health.
BEWARE OF YELLOW STAINS!One of the most common discolorations, yellow spots, often develop due to tea and coffee consumption. However, Zhang says this color can also be a sign of liver disease. When the liver is not functioning properly, the bile pigment bilirubin can accumulate in the body, causing the yellowing.
A dull gray hue on teeth may be the result of tooth "death" due to past trauma. Systemic conditions such as celiac disease can also disrupt the development of tooth enamel, leading to such discoloration. Enamel damage caused by celiac disease is permanent, but can be repaired with cosmetic solutions.
BROWN SPOTS ARE A SIGN OF EARLY CARIESBrown spots are often an early sign of cavities. However, more pronounced brown streaks may indicate dental fluorosis, a condition that develops due to excessive fluoride intake during childhood. Ingesting fluoride toothpaste, in particular, can contribute to this problem.
Some antibiotics, when used in childhood, can penetrate deep into the teeth and create blue or gray streaks. These stains can persist into adulthood.
Chalky white spots are often the initial sign of tooth decay. They can also be a sign of enamel defects related to celiac disease. Damage to the living tissue within the tooth or advanced decay can cause the black discoloration. In rare cases, this discoloration can be linked to heavy metal exposure.
Another discoloration that can indicate a genetic disorder is "mottled enamel." This condition creates an uneven, patchy color on the surface of the teeth. For example, genetic diseases such as amelogenesis imperfecta weaken tooth enamel, leaving teeth vulnerable to damage.
Zhang emphasizes that "Your teeth can reveal things your body hasn't yet told you," emphasizing that early detection of discoloration can help prevent health problems. Experts point out that 3.7 billion people worldwide struggle with oral and dental health issues, and say even a simple discoloration can save lives.
