MIT has launched another groundbreaking innovation in drone technology: MiFly. This revolutionary system allows drones to navigate dark interiors without the use of GPS or cameras, using only smart radio frequencies. High Precision Navigation and Radio Frequency TechnologyMiFly works with a radar system that uses high-frequency radio waves. This system communicates with special tags placed in closed spaces and radar systems integrated into the drones to enable the drones to move autonomously. MiFly can detect the location of the drones with incredible precision, just 7 centimeters, using radio frequencies known as millimeter waves (mmWave). This feature provides a great advantage, especially in moving packages between warehouse shelves, inventory management and sensitive tasks.
IMU Integration and Precisely Tracking the Direction of DronesOne of the most striking features of the system is its integration with MiFly’s Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Thanks to this, the drone’s heading and pitch angles can be determined with extreme precision. This data, combined with radar signals, precisely tracks every movement of the drone across six degrees of freedom. Furthermore, MiFly can operate effectively at distances of up to 6 meters, even when the drone is out of sight. This enables navigation to proceed smoothly even when the tags are out of sight of the drone.
High Reliability for Complex EnvironmentsThe radar system developed by MIT is specially designed to minimize interference. This radar, which can distinguish between polarized horizontal and vertical signals, provides reliable and uninterrupted navigation even in complex indoor environments by using different modulation frequencies. Thus, drones can be accurately guided and reach the desired targets even in difficult environments.
