Chebet sets world record in 5,000. Kipyegon also sets world record in 1,500

Beatrice Chebet, two-time Olympic champion in Paris in the 5,000 and 10,000, achieved an incredible feat at the Prefontaine Classic meeting in Eugene (Oregon), a stop on the Diamond League calendar.

The 25-year-old Kenyan, with a devastating finish (61'' the last 400 meters), became the first woman to break the 14' barrier in the 5,000: her 13'58"06 is worth it as a world record. Behind her, here is her compatriot Agnes Ngetich and the Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay, holder until today of the world record (14'00"21), set on September 17, 2023, also in Eugene. Chebet had already broken the world record in the 10,000 on the same track in Hayward a year ago: 28'54"14 and also in this case she is the first athlete to go under 29'.

But there is also glory for another Kenyan. In the 1500 Faith Kipyegon improved her world record by running 3:48.68. The 31-year-old, three-time Olympic champion and three-time world champion in the event, had set the old record of 3:49.04 in Paris last year.
