Rio de Janeiro hosted the official opening of the 12th edition of the 8½ Italian Film Festival last Thursday (26), which brings a special program to 23 Brazilian cities simultaneously until July 2. The event, which each year renews the cultural bridge between Italy and Brazil in the seventh art, took place at Italianorio, with the presence of the consul general of the European country in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, Massimiliano Iacchini

"We are here to do what we do best: promote our culture, confirming our commitment to the wonderful city," declared Iacchini.

In the city, the 11 contemporary films on the program and some of the greatest classics continue to be shown at the Estação Net Botafogo and Gávea cinemas.

Feature films include "Vermiglio", by Maura Delpero, winner of the Silver Lion at Venice 2024 and nominated for the 2025 Oscar in the category of best international film; "La vita accanto", by Marco Tullio Giordana; and "Iddu", by Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza, inspired by the figure of the Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro.

Guest of honor at the 2025 edition of the 8½ Festa do Cinema Italiano, Jacopo Quadri, one of Italy's most important film editors, will be in Rio, where he will participate in free meetings with the public.

The festival is organized by the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Il Sorpasso Association and Risi Film Brasil, with support from the Italian Embassy and the Italian Institutes of Culture in Rio and São Paulo.
