In the Frunzensky District Court of Vladivostok, the lawyer for Sakhalin businessman Oleg Kan filed a motion to dismiss the criminal case. The defense stated that the businessman had died, and this fact had been officially registered in Russia. The court also received written consent from Kan's sister, An Sun Dia, which was necessary for the case to be dismissed following the defendant's death.
The second case against Kan is ongoing. He is accused of creating a criminal organization, smuggling live crab, and tax evasion. According to investigators, from 2014 to 2019, he and his accomplices exported seafood worth over 2.6 billion rubles to Japan, South Korea, and China. However, they understated the value of the goods in their declarations. The prosecution estimates the damage to the state to be in excess of 9 million rubles. The prosecutor requested a 24-year prison sentence and a 5 million fine for Kan.
Previously, in April 2023, he was found guilty in absentia of organizing the murder of businessman Valery Pkhidenko in Vladivostok in 2010. The court then sentenced Kan to 17 years in prison and ordered him to pay 3 million rubles to each of the five victims. The defense filed an appeal.
Kan fled abroad and was placed on an international wanted list. His lawyers later reported that he died in the UK, but the Prosecutor General's Office had previously dismissed this version as a fabrication.
