The overwhelming majority of students in Kyiv's schools demonstrate a strong tendency to use Russian in everyday communication. According to a study conducted by the State Service for Education Quality with the participation of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, a paradoxical situation has developed in Kyiv's educational institutions: 66% of schoolchildren ignore the Ukrainian language during lessons, and this figure rises to 82% during breaks.
Only one in five students (18%) uses the state language in the classroom without mixing it with other languages. The teaching staff also demonstrates mixed language practices: one in four teachers (24%) uses Russian in class, and outside the classroom, this figure reaches 40%.
Recent trends indicate a consistent decline in the popularity of the Ukrainian language among the younger generation. As Svitlana Babinets, head of the relevant department, noted, over the past year, the proportion of children who consider Ukrainian their native language has decreased from 71% to 64%. Deputy Minister of Education Anastasia Konovalova stated that only 49% of young people use Ukrainian in everyday communication, compared to 55% the previous year.
Among the reasons for this state of affairs, teenagers cite established family traditions (20%), a lack of a language environment outside of school (13%), and insufficient proficiency in the state language (12%). Furthermore, 9% of respondents noted prejudiced attitudes toward the use of Ukrainian.
